Why Crypto Derivatives Markets Have Their Own Prices

Bitcoin can trade at $70,000 on the spot market while a futures contract linked to BTC trades at $70,120. The difference may seem unusual, especially since both markets follow the same cryptocurrency. Yet spot and derivatives prices are formed through separate trading activity, and they don’t always match.

Platforms offering products such as WhiteBIT futures provide access to contracts whose value depends on underlying assets. Understanding how these contracts are priced helps explain why derivatives charts sometimes look different from ordinary cryptocurrency charts.

Two markets for the same asset

A spot transaction involves buying or selling an actual cryptocurrency. When someone purchases BTC on a spot exchange, the resulting balance represents Bitcoin held in their account.

Cryptocurrency derivatives work differently. A derivative is a financial contract linked to the value of another asset. Its holder does not necessarily own the cryptocurrency referenced by the contract.

In futures markets, participants trade contracts based on expectations about future price movements. Their orders form a separate market, with its own liquidity, trading volume, and prices.

This explains why bitcoin derivatives can trade at prices slightly above or below Bitcoin’s spot value.

Why futures sometimes trade at a premium

Consider a hypothetical BTC spot price of $70,000 and a futures contract expiring in three months priced at $71,000.

The $1,000 difference is known as a premium. It may reflect financing conditions, the time remaining until expiration, and the balance between buyers and sellers.

A futures contract can also trade below the spot price, a situation commonly described as backwardation.

The relationship between futures and spot prices changes as market conditions evolve. For contracts with a fixed expiration date, the two prices generally converge as settlement approaches, subject to the contract’s settlement methodology.

Perpetual futures have no expiration date. They commonly use funding payments to encourage their market prices to remain close to the underlying reference price.

What happens during heavy trading?

Periods of volatility can produce sharp movements in derivatives markets.

In crypto derivatives trading, leveraged positions may be liquidated when their remaining margin falls below the required level. These automatic closures can generate additional market orders.

If many positions are liquidated around the same time, the resulting activity may contribute to rapid price movements.

Liquidity also plays a role. A large order can move through several price levels when there aren’t enough opposing orders available near the current market price.

These effects help explain why derivatives prices may briefly move differently from spot prices during turbulent sessions.

Contract details matter

Not all digital asset futures use the same specifications. Contracts may differ in expiration dates, settlement currencies, margin requirements, and funding arrangements.

Even contracts referencing Bitcoin can behave differently depending on those terms.

A crypto futures exchange establishes the rules under which its contracts are traded and settled. The platform’s order books then reflect the activity of participants trading those instruments.

The spot market remains an important reference, but it isn’t the only influence on derivatives pricing. Contract structure, leverage, liquidity, and trading activity all contribute to the prices displayed.

That is why a futures quote should be understood as the market price of a particular contract, rather than simply another display of the underlying cryptocurrency’s latest spot transaction.
